Cortina Mk 1 GT 2 Door Rebuild

Recommended Posts

After a whole lot of issues my 2 Door GT resto is back underway going great guns. Plan is to have the bodywork finished March 2018. When I bought the car about 2 years ago it was complete but hadn’t been on the road for a few years. It’s a factory 66 Dragoon Red car with black trim. It all looked pretty straight until the paint was removed from the engine bay and it’s had a hit in the front at some stage and a bodge 70-80,s repair done on both front chassi rails plus the firewall was creased as well as can be seen in the pics. I found an original virtually rust free 4 Door 1200 which we cut up for the front end and the floor and boot went into another 2 Door Mk 1. I secured 2 NOS chassi rails and the inner guards off the one we cut up and it’s all back together now. One thing of interest if anyone can help me with is when we stripped the paint off the right side inner front guard the chassi number was stamped adjacent to the top strut mount. I’m not sure if this was factory or not.

Yes that's factory but rarely exists after years of rusting.

Does anybody know what silver the original Mk 1 GT Air Cleaner housing is. Was it a satin or gloss finish? Thanks in advance for any info. Cheers Tim

Thanks Colin. I have been thinking the same about the Dragoon Red as it’s quite a dark red. I seen one you did online which I recall in Monaco Red and it looked stunning.

Another update with the front pretty well completed its on to rear to pop the rear quarters off to check they are all clean and then the rear tail light panel. Does anyone know of a NOS tail light panel they would be willing to sell? Updated pics in the link

Went to have a look at the Cortina today and more good progress. Front end all fitted off ready for final gapping and welding. Rear quarters removed for dipping and the whole lot very clean underneath so well impressed. RHS boot floor needs a replacement section and then its mount the body on the rotisserie for blasting before final rear panel fit off.
