MK5 Propshaft Centre Bearing

Recommended Posts

Hi,

How quickly would or can the centre bearing in a MK5 prop shaft fail? And is it quite obvious that it has failed, i.e lots of vibration?? :headscratch:

Cheers

Steve

The rubber insulator can rip in a short time if the gearbox is leaking from the rear seal, the gear oil softens the rubber insulator.

Hi Bortaf,

There are no current oil leaks but probably leaked before I got the car. Also It looks as if the bearing could be original i.e 35 years old and most likely out of warranty by now.

Is there up & down movement in the prop as I've found that more often it's the rubber mount rather than the bearing that goes.

Hi Craig,

There is quite a lot of movement in the rubber mount [Prop now off the car] I can see the outer edge of the bearing and it looks as if it has spun in the mount. There was a metallic screech when I reversed into the garage last night. :headscratch:

I will get the prop off to the people who shortened it for me for the A4LD project. They can fit a new bearing and rubber for me [i think]
