Worth the time to change to alternator??

I have all the parts to convert my mk2 from Dynamo to alternator .the dynamo on the car is working fine so is it worth it to convert to alternator??or should I just leave it original and wait for the Dynamo to stop working??cheers paul.

entirely up to you , converted both mine to alternator but was on one when doing an engine swap and the other because the dynamo did die

If you aren't running lots of additional auxiliary circuits or extra lamps you may as well leave it, I had one on my last mk3 and considered changing but it didn't seem worthwhile while it was still working.

 

Saying that, I don't know how long these things last but I guess if you want to preserve the dynamo by not using it you could fit the alternator anc keep the dynamo & regulator somewhere safe to return back if you ever fancy.

well they are all 40-50 year old now so pretty robust technology - even a 50 year old one will last longer from now than a cheap make alternator - on my second one on my Crayford since the dynamo - really need to find a better quality one or get an original rebuilt before this one dies as well

And don't forget there's two types of Dynamo ? The usual c40 and a c41 with a bigger output. The way you can tell them apart is the c40 has a "step" in the body .... :wine:
