mouse 6 Posted May 4, 2018 Hi Gang. For a while now I've been having trouble starting my Mk.1(1600 crossflow) I've tried different batteries on it and after a few seconds the starter motor runs slow. This starter is supposed to be remanufactured.. Now,I have a clip on ammeter. When I put the ammeter on my mates car the reading is 200 amps. When I put this ammeter on my engine it jumps about but reads about 400 A. Can any Gure out there shed any light on the current draw figures of this setup?? Regards Mouse..

If it's the same car/engine.....I think your engine has a lot more compression !!........or it's seizing up?
Tony Webster 32 Posted May 4, 2018 Sorry I don't have any spec's amperage wise, though I can offer a suggestion and say the motor may have a "short" in the armature or field windings ... All that current going straight to earth ............ :wine:
mouse 6 Posted May 4, 2018 Hi Gang. I think the suggestion about a short in the wingdings is probably correct. The next thing is to try another starter motor.. Regards Mouse..
Barnstormer 7 Posted May 5, 2018 (edited) If the starter is getting very hot in a short space of time it's looking like it's got a serious problem. I had the same problem with the starter running slow. The soldering in the windings had started to break up / melt. I overhauled it myself with a new armature - never had a problem since. Fairly easy job to do. Edited May 5, 2018 by Barnstormer

MK5 V8 1 Posted May 31, 2018 yep deffo the starter, if it was remanned then it wasn't done very well, probably a short from the field coils to the body
mouse 6 Posted May 31, 2018 Hi. Thank's for your reply.. I checked the field coils and sure enough there was a dead short. I'm looking for a body for the m35j. Regards Mouse..
Tigdlo 27 Posted June 1, 2018 Worth checking that the engine is properly earthed to the battery. Also, that the motor is bonded to the bellhousing. You say that it’s a refurbed motor, so check that there isn’t paint between the motor and the bellhousing.
