Educate me on mk2 GT trim

Recommended Posts

Ok I am looking into mk2 gt's. I cannot find any consistency to the out side trim, Did series 1's have any back and side trim? I have seen series 2 cars with back panel trim and wheel arch trim too but then some series 2 cars have none. Or is it just an option choice when new? Also I have seen some series 2 with a series one dash top. Can some Guru on here enlighten me please. Also do the LHD mk2 have the chassis holes on the right to convert them to RHD for the steering box?

Series 1 never had any rear trim, to my knowledge, but people facelifted there cars, same with the dashboards, the only real way to know if you are looking at a series 1 is that they have 2 vents in the dashboard steel to denist the screen and a series 2 has 4 vents, but all of this can be replicated or swopped, l think as well it is down to personal preference, some people count the number of spot-welds and some will tell you your car shouldn't have that piece on it and that part is wrong. And unfortunately you could be looking at a Super that has a GT identity, it is a mine field.

Oh, also series 1 and series 2 have different doors, so that is an easy way to tell what car you are looking at, but again doors are interchangeable, so could have the wrong doors on the car, series 1 have a nice radius where it is close to the bottom of the screen near to the A post, series 2 has less of a radius, l think that is the right way round.

S1 had the arch sill trim, while S2 had the rear panel trim. seats have different pattern too. but as said, all this can have been changed over the years. and -at least S1 LHD GTs in my country- had the trailing arms- as well. i m pretty sure there are other differences like fusebox on innerwing etc. also early cars had different slam panels but i can t tell when they changed to later type.

This is what I have for the Mk2 Lotus Cortina. Most of the changes were due to changes to the underlying base Ford model, rather than to the Lotus bits. The Lotus was based on the GT platform, and therefore most of the write-up is applicable to the GT. I will be adding left hand drive and market changes in due course.

Ok Hans the hunt is on in your neck of the woods then, let me know when one crops up. :jester:

I think i am ok with most of the changes between S1 and S2 cortina's (mind you you never stop learning) It was the outside trim thing that had me scratching my head. Do the LHD one's still have the mounting holes on the O/S for the steering box?

No Hans, I'd love to see it. I've now found a right hand drive 2 door 1600E to keep the left hand drive car company! Not anywhere near as good condition as it was found in Zimbabwe, laid up on bricks for many years. But it's all stripped out now waiting to go to the bodyshop to be made beautiful again!! There's only one other known survivor, so I have to do the best job I can.
