Beeper 60 Posted August 22, 2019 1. I would imagine so seeing as I refitted the old carb, it ran with the old carb. 2. No. 3. I changed my underpants but possible not on the same day.
dgo 67 Posted August 22, 2019 1. Then it must be carb related - you have sparks if it ran when you swapped back to the old carb 3. No comment!!
Beeper 60 Posted August 22, 2019 No, it wouldn't start on the old carb so that's why I was scratching my head! But! Here's an update. I've just come back from her mothers' which is just around the corner from the lockup and after a few turns, with the old carb, it fired up again. It has the sooty plug misfire again (hence I bought the new carb) but it fired up, so again I'm thinking that the old Fiesta condenser is a dud. I will try and pop over again tomorrow for a more thorough investigation. It's good this innit?
dgo 67 Posted August 22, 2019 Well that's a step forwards. Have you checked the new carb is getting fuel into the float chamber? Also have you checked the dizzy carefully around the points and the wiring? Might be worth doing that while you're changing the condenser
Beeper 60 Posted August 23, 2019 (edited) Popped in to the lockup again today. Pulled the car out a bit and fired it up (still got the old carb on). A bit hesitant but soon coughed into life. Still got that misfire and as I pushed the choke in the tickover dropped to about 700 rpm then spluttered to a stop. I swapped the Fiesta condenser for the newer one, turned the key and it sprang into life, the misfire wasn't as bad and it idled better. Next job is to try it again with the new carb after cleaning the plugs. Fill the master cylinder reservoir with fluid and leave that to sit for a while before bleeding the brakes. Who knows, it might be drivable before Christmas,......................... 2020. Edited August 23, 2019 by Beeper
Beeper 60 Posted September 6, 2019 This afternoon I return to the lockup which I have visited 3 times in the last couple of weeks and the car has started every time. I start it up, back it out, fit the new carb and everything goes pear shaped again. it refuses to start, I take the top off the carb off and the float chamber is full, I refit it and try again. The starter wire starts cooking again, even easystart won't make it cough! I remove the Weber and refit old carb, it still refuses to start again! I push it back inside and contact ebay seller to see if he will refund my money or if he has any clue as to why fitting the Weber seems to just generally upset my car so it refuses to start. The joke is wearing thin now!
Beeper 60 Posted September 9, 2019 (edited) Oh I'm so happy!.... After talking to carb supplier and him not really sounding like he wants to refund my money I went back over today, fully charged battery in hand. Pulled car out, opened bonnet, removed old carb, refitted new carb, put fresh fuel into the vents for the float chamber, pumped it a few times by hand to see if the accelerator pump was working, fitted the newest looking condenser out of the 3 I have, tried to start it and no joy. twiddled the dissy a little back and forth, cranked it over, it's showing interest but just not firing. You know when it sounds like it's trying but just isn't quite there? Oh I'm so happy.....NOT! So, what now? Edited September 9, 2019 by Beeper
sheffieldcortinacentre 610 Posted September 9, 2019 What is mixture screw set at? Have you tried a bit of petrol straight down carb? Are you getting a spark when it's cranking?
Beeper 60 Posted September 10, 2019 (edited) Even Easy Start down the carb does nowt. Had a spark last time I tried to start it, I put the strobe light on to check, mixture screw was set at 1 and a half turns, I increased that to two turns and still nothing. sheffieldcortinacentre 610 Posted September 10, 2019 Hmm have a think
sierra3dr 49 Posted September 11, 2019 @Beeper,it seems that the spark plugs are too wet to produce a spark
Beeper 60 Posted September 11, 2019 (edited) So explain to me how the plugs are too wet if it doesn't even try to fire up with the first turn of the key? They should be bone dry. I pushed the car out of the lockup, I removed the old carb, fitted the new carb, turned the key and you saw the result. See where it says current car over there? <----------- I wonder if there's a conversion kit for a Toyota VVTi engine. sierra3dr 49 Posted September 12, 2019 Oh,first turn of the key. Yes,should be dry. As you mentioned with easy start it wouldn't fire up
sierra3dr 49 Posted September 12, 2019 From my experience on my MK5,there's a cable that shakes itself off the starter, and gives the symptoms as what you are having. If the said cable comes off,it won't start, and all the power goes to the starter, and none to the ignition.
