Dave4577 1 Posted May 1, 2019 I have just taken my 1981 Cortina 2.0 auto estate for it's M.O.T. and although it has passed I have an advisory on a front subframe bush. If one is on it's way out then the rest can't be far behind. I need to get all four. The chap that works on my car has asked me to get rubber ones. Does anyone know a source? Online searches have revealed nothing. If they are not available has anyone experience of the alternatives? Thanks for looking. Dave

Dave You're going to have to lift the body off the sub frame anyway so it would probably make sense to do all 4 bushes. I'd use new old stock genuine Ford ones, some of the new reproduction stuff isn't very good. Your mechanic is right, use rubber ones, don't bother with those florescent orange things that seem to be all the fashion just now. Here's some gen Ford ones I found on the Bay Bushes . All four bushes are not the same, one pair have a slightly longer internal tube. The ones in that link are the longer ones but from what I understand you could buy two pairs and cut one pair down to the correct length for the shorter ones. Shouldn't be too bad a job to do. Remove 4 sub frame mounting bolts, ARB brackets, gearbox mount, steering linkage, steady the sub frame/engine/gearbox assy and lift the body off the sub frame either on the jacking points or an engine hoist on the bumper irons. You may have to disconnect the exhaust and a few other things but your mechanic is going to know that anyway.

Dave4577 1 Posted May 7, 2019 Thanks everyone for your help. I was unable to get genuine Ford ones using eBay. Bushes (pattern) have arrived from South Wales Propshafts very quickly and reasonably priced. I will get the chap who looks after the car to fit the complete set for me on the basis that if one has quit the others won't be far behind.
Dave4577 1 Posted May 16, 2019 Sorry to open this up again but apparently I need the four mounting bolts as the ones on the car are in grim condition. Does anyone know where I could get a set? Any help much appreciated.
sheffieldcortinacentre 764 Posted May 16, 2019 Might have some if not a good fasteners supplier should stock them think there M12.
Dave4577 1 Posted May 17, 2019 Thanks for your quick response. The chap who works on the car seems to be under the impression that they were not regular bolts. As he commented though, it's 20+ years since he did the last one! If you did have some "original" ones and would be prepared to send them to Bournemouth that would be great. I can pay by PayPal or any other preferred method. Immediate payment of course.

He may be thinking of the rear suspension arms to body bolts, they're a standard M12 thread but with unique 24mm AF head. Front upper and lower arm bolts are M12 metric fine As far as I am aware all the other suspension bolts front and rear are standard metric. There are 4 sub frame mounting bolts, two M12 x 110mm and two M12 x 100mm, all 8.8 hardness. You'll get those from any decent hardware store. They'll more than likely be bright zinc plated, depending on how much of a stickler for originality you are you'll have to search the net for yellow zinc plated bolts, but here's one place that does them bolts . Don't be tempted to use stainless steel for suspension bolts, they're too soft.
RichardJ 59 Posted May 17, 2019 Aren't the factory bolts also machined with a point at the end of the threads to make location easier? That's the only other difference from regular 8.8 bolts I can think of, apart from the the two 24mm head bolt already mentioned. As noted above, don't ever use stainless steel on suspension bolts. Regular stainless is too soft, and if you get the super strong A4-80 rated stuff, it's failure mode is to snap/shear rather than bend, which really isn't something you want in suspension.
