Gheko 0 Posted July 14, 2019 Hi guys, just wondering...mk3 cortina 1971 1.6 ohc , what are those electronic ignition kits that are for sale on eBay, the one that just fits into your own distributor, are they any use or would I be better getting the whole lot off a Sierra and fitting ?? Any thoughts. Thanks in advance. 👍🏽👍🏽
johnny boy 159 Posted July 14, 2019 I used an Accuspark kit. It was very easy and quick to fit, and worked. I'd recommend one for price ,ease of fitting, and it worked well.
Gheko 0 Posted July 15, 2019 Thanks for input Johnny boy, where did you purchase? Can I use my own cap , coil and leads ? 🤔
John Mack 242 Posted July 15, 2019 I used accuspark too, "stealth" type I think. Replaced the coil as well and by-passed the ballast wire. It worked ok for a while but then I started getting problems. Sometimes it would intermittently not start although I appeared to be getting a spark? One day it didn't start and I just converted back to good ol' points and condenser ...................... never had a bit of bother since. Not sure what was wrong, if it was the trigger thing or the coil? I binned the lot. I wouldn't be adverse to trying 'leccy ignition again, just not this type. No need to change your cap or leads or coil, if you don't want to, but changing to better leads and coil, and new plugs will be better option. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stealth-Electronic-ignition-kit-Ford-Escort-X-Flow-engine-Motorcraft-distributor/112666739714?hash=item1a3b760402:g:bygAAOSwEZdaIV~
johnny boy 159 Posted July 15, 2019 I did find that I had to reset the ignition timing after fitting, I guess as the unit did not sit in the exact place as the points.
Gheko 0 Posted July 15, 2019 Cheers Johnny boy , I’ve been doin a bit of research on them, seem ok but a lot of people say they only good for small mileage. What’s your experience?
sheffieldcortinacentre 523 Posted July 15, 2019 Not had much luck with accuspark units, gettin hard to find now but would track down a ford setup.
Gheko 0 Posted July 16, 2019 Hi Sheffield cortina center you recon I would be better going the Sierra system route? Would you not like the accuspark setup.

What’s your experience? I don't know why , the small mileage ? It's a hall effect system I think, it's not new technology , I can't see why they wouldn't be up to much, no moving parts other than the ring on the shaft. Fit and forget😀
Gheko 0 Posted July 16, 2019 I think I’ll try this and see, would be easier than trying to find a Sierra set up. Thanks for the sound advice guys. 👍🏽

sheffieldcortinacentre 523 Posted July 16, 2019 I'd go for that /\ setup. Each to his own but not had much luck with the accuspark set ups on various makes & models I've come across while others have. The same goes for holley carbs had/having nothing but hassle with them.
