1300 OHV Mk5 Clutch Issues

Recommended Posts

Hi All, hope we are well? Having a wee issue with my Cortina I feel I should investigate before I use her again:  better safe than sorry!! So,it came up the road fine the 200 mile journey on Saturday. However this is the first journey it's had since the 1990s so could be lack of use causing an issue.

A couple of occasions on Saturday I felt it was holding onto gears a wee bit when trying to take into neutral or changing gear, wasn't too bad though and the box is beautifully smooth.

However today I wanted to go for a wee trundle but thought better of it. Started the car no bother, running fast but choke on.  Went to put into gear and was very difficult to engage no matter what gear, and in fact reverse wasn't happening without an almighty crunch as soon as the gears even started to mesh. Switched off, restarted and all was back to beautifully smooth so pulled out the garage but it did it again and the only way I could get it to act normally was switch off and on again. When in gear when it's misbehaving it's very very hard to come out of gear as though the clutch is having little or no effect but its the on and off one minute ok one minute not that's baffling. Is it a hydraulic clutch or a cable?

Needless to say needs rectified before I dare venture anywhere to be on the safe side!!!! Probably all those years being stored not done things any favours.

Wondering if I'd be better having a new clutch fitted or if some things needing adjusted?

Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards

Two immediate thoughts:

1. Is the clutch pedal adjusted OK - assume from what you have said that it is likely to be

2. Given the lack of use, likely that the clutch is sticking either on the splines or to the flywheel. Only way to find out and clean it if necessary is to whip the box off.

What about the auto adjuster if fitted on this model on the pedal slipping sometimes ?

More than likely the auto adjusters worn.

Or as said sticking due to lack of use.

Russell......you're back!...………...in a mk5 !

You could try putting the clutch pedal to the floor and then slide your foot to the side letting the pedal "fly" up...…...it feels rough but this jolt may be enough to re-adjust the mechanism??

Great to be back mate thank you so much  hope you are well? My mechanic was out to have a look this morning and he reckons a build up on the flywheel so has suggested as a course of action to whip the box out, new clutch kit, new oil in the box and clean the flywheel so it's perfectly smooth and clean and this should cheer the car up no end 🙂 Would this be the right clutch kit below, or  an someone recommend where and what one to buy? Also what gear oil should I buy and how much of?

I would take the clutch out first and have a look at it before you source the new one so that you are sure you get the correct one.  If it's still the original clutch in there it'll have a Ford part number on it so you can do some cross referencing from that.

I would also try and source a LUK clutch (you'll probably find the original was manufactured by LUK anyway).  Borg and Beck is part of the First Line group and a lot of that stuff is utter toffee of the usual Chinese import standard .  LUK is German owned and the clutches made in the UK.  I bought a 2.0 LUK clutch in the Summer from Ebay seller Car Parts in Motion, cost £58.

Many Thanks mate for above that's very helpful, I shall aim to get a clutch kit made by LUK then and a good idea to check part numbers first.
