MK3 2 door GT rebuild

Recommended Posts

Got a hold of this 2 door GT back in 2015 (i think) and started working away to see what needed to be done.

this is the first project of my life so lots of lesson to be learnt along the way but enjoying it, will upload the build so far then keep everyone posted as i move along.

The orange 4 door was my first cortina. a very tidy 72 1300 when i got her, proceeded to put a 2l and 5 speed in aswell as replace most of the bushes and suspension. sadly this is the only photo i took of the 2 cortinas together. ended up selling the 4 door to make ends meet while is was overseas working.

being in a carport when the weather is bad its not a lot of fun to work on the car. so i occupy myself by tidying up all the little bits i can.

personally i really enjoy this part and as a result ive nearly done everything i can.

Here is how she sits now. In 2016 i moved overseas for work and have just returned to nz due to covid19. I have since stripped out everything that remained (engine, gearbox, steering, wiring etc)

I am now stripping areas back to bare metal to find all rust, starting with the floor.

Due to nz's strict lockdown i cant buy many tools to help this process so am stuck with wirewheels, but it keeps me busy.

with over 3 years having not worked on the car i am really enjoying being back at it. part of me hopes i stay out of work for 6 months to allow me to finish it. only time will tell

At least your strict lockdown should work, have friends over in Rotarua and they are impressed at how quickly your PM put restrictions in place, stay well and get stuck in!!

Floor has now had POR15 applied. lots of time went into cleaning the floor up, used a drill and wirewheels to strip a lot of it. wanted to make sure i found any bits of rust. thankfully nothing bad was found. A few holes that will get cut out when the world reopens.

Plan is to repaint the boot white to keep as much of the original look as possible, but atleast its sealed for now

Lock down has just been extended for 4 days so going to start work on underneath. really wishing i had a rotisserie!

looking into tidying a few bits up. anyone got any tips on fixing a boot trim, its got a few scratches in what appears to be alluminium sections.

also wanting to know if this is the correct one for a GT, seen a few different types in photos.

Cheers
