mk2 cylinder head can it be reused ?

Recommended Posts

hi guys,i have a cylinder head amongst my spares that has rusty valve seats and wondered if anyone can give an opinion on weather or not it can be reconditioned with new valve seats or if at this stage its just fit for the bin.  i have attached a few pics of the valve seats for your perusal  thanks in advance

i have another head as well worse than the one pictured above that both inlet and exhaust valve seats are badly rusted so im amsuming that one would most definitely be fit only for the bin ??

I don't see why you couldn't get some hardened exhaust seats fitted to those.  Would even help with Unleaded

cheers,i was wondering if hardened exhaust seats might sort the head pictured out, just wondering on my other head if its possible to replace both the inlet and exhaust seats as they are so close together it might be pushing it and all of them rusty

You'd have to ask the machine shop if there's space or if the inlets can be recut.  I'm not a pre-crossflow expert but if I remember right there are larger inlet valves (usually a performance mod) to use if the valve seats have to be recut a lot

The valve seats can almost certainly be recut, or have inserts fitted at a price.

Before doing so though, I would suggest having the head(s) crack tested.

Consider too that the valve guides may require attention if worn, all extra cost!
