nascar66 74 Posted March 24, 2021 Let us know how you get on with the registration Johnny. I take it no one is going to inspect it in person if they've asked for photos? I still haven't registered mine as I was going to MOT it first!

You don't need an MOT to register a car that's exempt. People will tell you that you need one , but you don't. Just get your car registered, before you modify it. It's is all original and standard though!

Ok, I see you thinking, but DVLA are not predictable as to how they operate. Good luck 🙂
johnny boy 159 Posted May 20, 2021 All registered and v5 back 2 weeks ago 😀 Now up on the ramp , checking over for recommissioning. All brake pipes good, needs new rear shoes and cylinders, and a hand brake cable, freed up all the hand brake linkage / wheels, front out rigger jacking point repairs, and rear part of one sill, front and rear valances are rusty too. order up parts from MK2 owners club.
johnny boy 159 Posted May 22, 2021 Today I've been looking at getting the engine running, or as it happens not getting very far The engine turns over, so not seized, but clicks when trying to start. I took the starter motor off , and stripped it, lube it , and took the solenoid apart, the cotacts and bus bar were pretty burnt, so i cleaned them up , and made good the ballast contacts in the solenoid, which didn't pas current. put it all back together and it spins fast now. I think the car was robbed of a few bit in its Swedish barn home, as I cant find a ballast or wire for the coil. does anyone have a picture of the ballast location and wiring ? Thanks Johnny
mk2sav 37 Posted May 22, 2021 The ballast wire is in the loom on a mk2 but normally they will fire on the key in second position but stop when key returns to running position if the ballast has failed . Coil lead should be yellow/white i think from memory .
johnny boy 159 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) Thanks, I'll have a look. I have the 12v wire from the starter to the coil ,that powers up when cranking , but not the reduced voltage ballast wire yet, haven't found that, must be there somewhere. That's the joy of a car that's been laid up , and robed of parts, I just don't know what's missing until its uncovered. johnny boy 159 Posted May 23, 2021 Looks like 2 wires go into one at the starter solenoid , one must be a reduced voltage from the ballast in the loom , that I can't find , will check out with a volt meter 🙄
johnny boy 159 Posted May 23, 2021 I think I've found the cause of the wired wiring faults, and back feeding. Under the dash the fat brown wire spears to have melted into other wires 🙄 Just what I wanted.
johnny boy 159 Posted May 29, 2021 Bit more work on the lefty. Wiring loom out from behind dash, all melted together , it will take a strip out and check all the wires , and replace some 🙄
mk2sav 37 Posted June 1, 2021 (edited) I expect you have already realised but that is your ballast wire in the pic - the material covered wire . EDIT just seen the other post - sorry ! Edited June 1, 2021 by mk2sav
johnny boy 159 Posted June 1, 2021 😀👍 The loom is out, just got to get it on the kitchen table , and strip it , to see how messy it is 🙄. Just finding the time 😄
nascar66 74 Posted June 2, 2021 I'm always impressed with how much you get done Johnny. Keep the updates coming. It's a shame that someone fitted speakers to the door panels!

Yes , a bit annoyed about the speaker holes, but they will look better with speakers fitted, and that's about all l can do 😄 Quite a bit to do on the recommissioning still yet,
