kevinsingh 1 Posted July 8, 2021 Hello everyone hope all are well… please..can anyone tell me if the noisy diff in fourth gear is an easy Sunday job or is this a specialist job that I should not undertake on the driveway.. I been told by home mechanics could be diff bearings ?? Thanks in advance
sheffieldcortinacentre 524 Posted July 8, 2021 Are you sure it's the diff? As if it's only in fourth that could be gearbox. A rear wheel bearing can be checked by cornering at mid speed (40ish ) when turning left the weight goes on the right wheel if noise gets worse it's that bearing, or vice versa when turning right. If noise doesn't change this would point towards diff. Halfshaft ones are pretty simple. Diff is best left to a recon place as whole axle needs stripping then re setting as to loose & gears could strip to tight & it could seize. On mk3/4/5 it's quicker easier to swap whole axle. A novice should be able to do it in a weekend . If yours is a manual 1.6 saloon then you need the same 3.89:1 from another mk3/4/5 saloon as the auto magic & estate use a 4.11:1. You need a decent trolley jack, axle stands & a few spanners/ sockets. Think I've one axle lift if it is but have to be collected.
