Mk3 steering rack.

I have a beauford car with 1977 cortina running gear. I have excessive play on the steering. Can you adjust these or is there a kit i can buy to fix this. Thanks.

Where is the play?  We really need more detailed explanation of where your problem is

 

For example:

 

 - Have you checked the column connection to the extension shaft and the steering shaft to the rack and pinion are done up securely

 

 - You can get bushes for the steering column, there's a known issue with the plastic bush in the nearside of the rack going brittle and disintegrating (link)

 

 - Track rod ends and other ball joints can be replaced easily and the tie rod bushes influence steering too (they deteriorate and need occasional replacement)

 

 - The bushes that hold the rack in place can rot if they're old (you can get poly replacements) and if your car still has it the collapsible link can get very tired (Link)

 

 - If it's the rack, they can be replaced with refurbed ones e.g. Link

 

Please be careful not just to use the links I've posted, products change depending on whether you have power steering etc

There is exesive play on streering wheel when i turn it. It is not power steering

There are shims under the two plates where pinion shaft enters rack, if you get a Haynes manual it tells you how to do this.

Its a very simple job.
