Factory coachlines on a MK3

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Getting close to finishing   this Mk3 just have a few little jobs to do. Does anyone know the spec of the factory coachlines (presume these were fitted at the factory and not the dealers?).

I'm unsure of the exact position (should have taken measurements only  have an old photo to go on when i bought the car in 2006). Presume it should follow the line of the trims fitted to the E and GXL? .

Anyone fitted one of these..hints and tips gratefully received :)

Yes same position as GXL/E  preface-lift GT is a thin pair with the top one coming down at each end to meet bottom one ( will get pic of mine tomorrow.

Facelift GT is a triple stripe thin outer coming to a point at each end with a thick centre again coming to a point.

Thanks chaps.

I like the look of the curved stripe but it looks tricks so will practice with a bit of spare tape first.

I can't see an obvious swage line so im convinced its going to look dog legged ..just going to aim for about an inch above the front indicator and the corner of the rear lamp. :juggle:

I would only fit on a really warm day, and on the ends I would dab a bit of clear coat to stop the pin stripe from lifting or peeling.

Lay a line of extra fine 3mm masking tape as your guide, as there is nothing worse that a stripe as straight as a donkeys leg.

When i did mine,i followed the shape of the body line, as i thought a straight line along a curved body didn't look right.

I am thinking of a 3 or 5mm single silver stripe when it is finally finished.

As GhiaMK4/5 said, a warm day,or garage & use a bit of clear lacquer on the ends to stop peeling.

Thanks ghia that's a good idea about the masking tape ..I'm convinced it's going to grab and look crooked  and then it will annoy me forever. I was even thinking of borrowing my brother in laws laser level

That looks like a good idea thanks Deano.  Was it difficult to get the tape to bend around the curves ?

Thanks Sir Craig, Would the facelift Gt have something like this ? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275152017968

Can't decide if it would look right on an XL ..was there a 4 door facelift GT ?  :juggle:
