A sharp punch should be able to loosen the remaining piece of bolt.

Don't buy the Chinese poo off eBay, you do get what you pay for, only problem with taps is that they are very brittle, get the right diameter hole drilled, I have a Zeus's book somewhere that gives the relevant size, use tapping fat/grease to lubricate the tap and just rotate half a turn and back it off, never force it, rotate another half turn and back off, get a taper tap if you can as it will be easier going in to the block.

Hopefully I don't come across as a know it all, but I am a time served old school mechanical/structural engineer, I have been repairing my own vehicles since I was 17 and was ripped off by a local garage, I have never used a garage since, I hope I never have to.

No you don’t at all.

I’m not overly mechanically minded but would rather try fix something myself before getting someone else to do it.

I appreciate the advice and help

Agree re taps I cringe when I see them being screwed in even more so when I see it being done with a cordless drill!

Pardon the French but I only fkn did it :). With the use of a Dremel, drill, screwdriver and hammer I got the remains lose then managed to get a pair of modelling long nose pliers on it and pull it out. Next I need to replace a hose and then see if she still over heats but so relieved.

slowly. When fitting the thermostat does the rubber ring go in first then the thermostat and then the clip?

On mine there's a groove in the rubber ring, so you slip the ring over the edge of the thermostat and put the whole thing in as one assembly, then fit the metal clip

If the rubber seal does not have a groove in it you put the seal in first, then the thermostat, then the metal clip. Check the rubber seal has not dislodged (you can see/feel that through the outlet of the housing.

Also (I'm sure you don't need me to say this) but please do make sure you fit the stat the right way up i.e. with the sensor section pointing towards the engine block
