bugsntinas 29 Posted October 17, 2022 After putting the thermostat together the b.t.h won’t start. There’s fuel going thru the filter she turns overrr but won’t fire. I used some easy start but not even a cough or splutter. I’m so over this car now.
Cortina1975 29 Posted October 17, 2022 Mine was like that until i replaced the condenser with a new old stock Lucas part. Had to remove the plugs and heat them with a gas torch to get it going sometimes. My Datsun that lives outside always starts first click but with this Ford ohc everything has to be just so or it's no bueno Helped having the points set with a dwell gauge it was way out of spec using feeler gauges.
bugsntinas 29 Posted October 17, 2022 I forever seem to be replacing the condenser lol. Put a new one on just before it overheated about 3 months or so ago. I’d easily sell her tomorrow
sheffieldcortinacentre 747 Posted October 17, 2022 Are you using a 12v coil instead of the correct ballasted 9v one? As this can burn out points & / or condensers.

sheffieldcortinacentre 747 Posted October 17, 2022 It should say either on the top or on a label stuck to side 12v non ballast ( these are for electronic ignition), 9v ballasted ( for points ignition).

GhiaMk4/5 207 Posted October 21, 2022 Check for spark first, l have had this happen twice in 40 years, spark plugs completely failed. But in the mean time, l swopped everything and burnt out a starter motor.

John Mack 329 Posted October 23, 2022 First thing I'd do is check for voltage at coil + terminal.

bugsntinas 29 Posted October 23, 2022 Just pulled the lead of the diz cap and there’s no spark so I guess the coils knackered

Assuming you're getting voltage to the coil, remove the negative wire and then (with ign on) use a bit of wire to "flash" the neg to earth and you should get a spark from the coil (have the king lead rigged up to an earthed spark plug in anticipation !) This will confirm if coil is ok. Maybe there's a youtube guide that may show you the above better than I can describe?!.........there's likely a trouble shooting guide in Haynes manual maybe?
bugsntinas 29 Posted October 24, 2022 Thanks John. I had a quick look on YouTube and it made sense. NOT THE SAGA CONTINUES i did what John suggested and got a spark so good coil. Put all the leads on and got my son o turn the key out of curiousity and with no choke she fired up instantly. NOW after 20/30 seconds she started smoking on the exhaust manifold and noticed wet coming out the engine so assumed head gasket. Couldn’t see if she over heated as didn’t want to wreck things so took a quick vid. NOW as I watched the vid to load I thought “hang on that’s the rocker it’s coming from” so hopefully the vid will load and you guru’s an confirm it for me. Hoping the thermostat sorted the overheating but don’t know yet FD0E852F-0DEF-416E-A4F1-0FDF3EBC05F0.MOV
