Maybe the cam cover has been over-tightened and it's distorted? There looks like oil above the gasket area which is maybe just misting from filler cap but that could mean the engine is breathing a bit much?.......maybe this is just over thinking the issue though !! Why don't you remove the cam cover, ensure it's not distorted and refit it with a new gasket , clean off the oil form the cover and manifold and see how you get on?
GhiaMk4/5 207 Posted October 25, 2022 If your car has overheated, I would do a compression test, at least then you will have some indication as to whether or not to remove the head.

It's always worth checking the Cam Cover as they do distort where the bolts go through in to the head. It is also worth straightening the washers that go undr the bolt heads.

It does have what looks like a corner missing. It joins up when you fit it into the cover. Be careful the gasket will only fit one way due to the locating tabs been different on both sides. You could get a set of these after market "Washers" They do help to seal the cam cover better than the Standard Ford Ones https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254389273068? Good luck.
