I've supplies all the power ( carries charge from alt to battery) except starter motor which is the thick lead. That thin lead must supply the ignition switch though? The original terminal on the end that connects to the battery must have been hanging on by a dogs breath. Once it fell off and I replaced it with a new ring terminal the difference was unreal. It fired the starter over no problem and fixed the "nothing happening when the ign switch was in start position". Still worth a check I think, or if in doubt replace it anyway. Thanks Martog, Ah I didn't know that the thin wire to the battery was a fusible link --presumably it's under the plastic sleeve ?.. .. I've been having a few starting issues when the battery isn't 100% charged for a while now. The terminal going to the solenoid is definitely a bit loose now because it's always getting knocked of its post when i work on the car.
