main beam not working,

Recommended Posts

My folks.

my mk5 main beams are not working, although the blue light on the dash is. Bulbs are OK. Is it likely to be the switch or the dip stick do you think? or something else. I think it's either the fourth or fifth fuse for main beam ...

(had all the wrong fuses in it, mostly 25A, so I've changed them to 16/8/8/16/16/16/8 from left to right. I don't think that's a factor. Haynes manual has it all wrong I think.)

Not urgent  I don't go out in the dark anyway.... :-)  May be an image of text

Hi, did they ever work dude?

If it helps, In Haynes manual it states there are four headlamp fuses located within a relay behind the windscreen washer reservoir.

1 - 16A L/H dipped Headlight

2 - 16A R/H dipped Headlight

3- 16A R/H main beam headlight and L/H aux light

4- 16A L/H main beam headlight and R/H aux light

Not sure, not had it long and don't go out at night so maybe not.

Haynes manual is I'm sure wrong. It was only the Mk3 had the separate headlight fuses

Try wiggling/ cleaning the fuse nearest windscreen, also the plug underneath the fusebox my crayford does it especially if it's been stood.

OK Craig I will. I didn't think that fuse was Headlights though. (all fuses are brand new)

i see reading old topics that this is a common fault! Will check further later.

Which fuse does what? I don't want to rely on Haynes !

well with a bit of fiddling around and testing , they're now working. Main beam is fuse four and dip is five. Thanks for the replies

It's possible for what appears to be a good wiring connection is not. Corrosion can get inside the connectors, (especially on old cars) push on and even screwed fittings. If wiggling makes it work then the lasting repair is to take the connection off and clean both sides until they gleam then refit ensuring they are tight. Recurrent intermittent symptoms suggest this is the problem.

Good you got it working but may reoccur.

Change of subject - in your photo there is a beige estate, that yours too? Just interested as I have one too.

it is mine but it's not an estate, (I can see how you might think so though, trick of the light...) May be an image of 13 people, car and text
