Mk3 temp sensor

Recommended Posts

Hi, is it possible to check the engine / coolant temp sensor by shorting the sensor wire to ground like can be done when checking the fuel sender? Many thanks.

Yes, by doing so and assuming the gauge rises to the maximum then you're confirming the wiring and gauge are good.  You aren't actually testing the sensor, just everything else.

Hi, that's what I was hoping, at least I can rule out any problems in the rest of the circuit. I'm assuming that the sensor just acts as a thermistor between the gauge and ground?

Yes & it's usually the problem, becareful when buying a replacement that it has the same colour plastic insert or it won't read correctly ( white I think is correct one)

Any mk3-4-5 will work as will MK2 escort mk1-2 Granada.

80's ones IE sierra, MK3 Granada, fiesta mk3-4 escort/Orion are no good, same goes for 60's ones plus MK1 esc, Capri.

Hi, I've bought one with a white band, should it thread straight into the block of does it need a smear of sealant or some ptfe tape on the thread first? I'm wondering if it needs to make electrical contact to work properly. Many thanks.
