Heedwa 6 Posted March 20 Hi guys Been away so haven't posted in a while. Went to start my cortina mk3 up and was slow cranking for a few days without starting. Tried to start it yesterday and it's just completely dead. No crank at all. Battery seems OK, fully charged it. Lights, heater, wipers all worked, so I'm guessing it's the starter. Could anyone kindly tell me the parts numbers for both the alternator and the starter motor please? I have a lucas alternator, and the starter motor has 3 pins on the solenoid. Also, what type of battery is best? I know there's a parts list on this site somewhere but I can't seem to find it! Thank you again. Always appreciate the help I get on here. sierra3dr 49 Posted March 20 The red thick cable is from the battery evidently, and there is the black spade cable, The round terminal is the ballast cable. A 075 battery is adequate

dgo 67 Posted March 21 (edited) I got fed up with replacing/repairing ACR alternators on my Mk4. I went for an A127 like this: LINK. If you go that route make sure you get the version that used the Vee belt and takes the Lucas plug not the screw terminals - unless you fancy doing some rewiring work Edited March 21 by dgo

This is perfect. Speaking of rewiring, the wires from the plug on my current alternator (Lucas) have come loose. Ordered a new plug, took the wires off the old plug to rewire but both cables are the same colour! My question is, does it matter which cable goes where in the alternator plug? Or will I have to figure out which is a +/-? Thanks
dgo 67 Posted March 21 Unless something has been done to your wiring you should find that the two large wires are both +ve 12v and can be fitted to either of the large terminals. The small one triggers the dashboard warning light
sheffieldcortinacentre 600 Posted March 21 Small one should be blue( without this one it will not charge or have an ignition light).
Heedwa 6 Posted March 21 Thanks guys, that's really helpful information. Gives me the confidence to rewire the plug. My alternator only had 2 cables running to it (larger ones), the smaller one was missing. Could this cause issues? The engine started up fine previously without it, but without it could it be an issue at some point?
sheffieldcortinacentre 600 Posted March 22 It should have one or two large red cables ( these carry the actual change power) then a thin blue one this connects to the small terminal & ignition light. Without this blue one (& the bulb) the alternator will not charge ( it will run fine but eventually the battery will go flat). The ignition light should come on in key position 2 then go out once the engine starts ( you may need to blip the throttle to get it to go out on initial start up) if it does come on or stays on once running then the battery won't charge. sheffieldcortinacentre 600 Posted March 22 All manual 1.3/1.6 eng on MK3 ( plus prefacelift automatics) have an inertia starter with a separate solenoid fastened to pass inner wing between battery & heater. Make sure the wires are ok here. All manual 2.0 (plus facelift automatics) have a pre-engaged starter with built in solenoid this must have a big terminal & two small ones a spade & a bullet ( later ones with only one large & one small bullet terminal WILL NOT work no matter what the seller says on std 4 cyls). Part numbers aren't much use as the varie between manufacturers. There is a parts list in the tech section to help with what fits what.
TimB 55 Posted April 9 Hello, Only just seen this post so this may be a little late. Why are you looking to replace the alternator, starter and battery. It is very unlikely all are faulty, if any at all. Get the problem properly diagnosed before throwing money at parts possibly not needed. It could be just a poor or bad connection on a lead that just needs taking off and cleaning or even just a cable replacing. Good luck
