Power steering for Mk 3

Recommended Posts

This has probably been discussed many times before so apologies in advance. I want to fit power steering to my Mk3 cortina. I don't necessarily need something that will bolt in with minimal changes (although that would be nice). I did read somewhere that a Cortina mk4/5 power steering rack would work but I haven't been able to find one of those so far. So looking for available rack options the right length, happy to make mounts, hydraulic pipes etc.

I've come across a sierra 4wd psr, does anyone know if that would have potential? I'm not sure what the difference is between the sierra 2wd and 4wd rack?

I hoping to hook whatever rack I end up with to the standard Range rover pump on the 3.5 V8 that's going in. Would that be a problem or does both the pump and rack have to match, ie from the same car?

Thanks in advance for any help/info.

Stu

The 4wd is slightly different  to 2wd mounts etc due to the weird cross member they have.. mating pump is only size/thread of fittings ( any hydraulic place shouldn't have a problem) I think some use the same pump as ford Audi & pug did at one point.

Thanks, do you know if the Sierra racks are the correct width for the Cortina? although I guess I could machine down the tie rod ends if they're too long

Overall width yes, the track rod ends are same thread so cortina ones fit..

The 4WD Sierra rack mounting is on the front of the subframe as that of a Cortina. The Pinto PAS used the saginaw pump. You have aggro in finding the twin pulleys for the crank, water pump and alternator. Might be worth look into  the EPS method.

The ohv Pas will work fine with single belt.

He's running a rover v8

Does anywhere still sell cortina inner tie rods? And if so, where? Internet is failing me.

I have been refitting the front suspension and steering. Whilst the sierra rack looked the right length off the car, both wheels are now toe out, so the sierra rods are too long

I just measured the cortina arms that came off the car and they are 30mm shorter, so would certainly help.

Thanks

P.s. The old ones are knackered, otherwise I would just use them

I'm just curious as to why you/anybody would 'need' PAS on a Cortina with a Rover V8, when the Pinto SOHC block is heavier than the Rover V8 block? I suppose wanting and needing are two different things though.

You sure about that ?

Interweb says ohc 140 -160 kg fully dressed

v8 170 - 180 kg fully dressed.
