disco_monkey79 33 Posted August 21, 2024 I am totally striking out in trying to find a lhd power rack for my mk4, so it looks like I may need to mod something to fit. I have seen various threads making reference to modding Sierra and granada racks, but can you point me to any threads that actually show the process? Also, I have found a lhd Mk2 granny rack (which looks similar to the cortina style), and a lhd mk3 granny rack (which looks like the Sierra style). Which would be simpler to mod on? Or would a Sierra one be simpler? Much obliged.
sheffieldcortinacentre 759 Posted August 21, 2024 Granada is to big/wide. Sierra needs new mounts on cross member as there in a different place, otherwise fits track rod ends are same thread & column same fitting.
disco_monkey79 33 Posted August 21, 2024 Thanks for the info. Is narrowing a granada rack not on the cards? If this stuff was cheaper I'd happily buy it and try, but not when I am potentially wasting £200-plus quid!
sheffieldcortinacentre 759 Posted August 21, 2024 No idea, it's the centre body & rack inside that are wider & it's held onto cross member by big U bolts. So not a simple job. Whereas the sierra is same size just has a single mounting bolt each end ( cortinas have 2) which I believe needs a triangular piece of plate welding onto top of cradle ( similar to the piece that's on the bottom &a hole drilling in it. disco_monkey79 33 Posted August 22, 2024 Brill, thanks. I will hold out for a Sierra (or cortina) rack. Thanks again
sheffieldcortinacentre 759 Posted August 22, 2024 Glad to help it's hard to explain but very simple/obvious once you have a rack. Don't get a 4x4 rack there different. All 2wd ones are the same don't fall for the cossy tax.
disco_monkey79 33 Posted August 22, 2024 Cheers, will do. Not seen a lhd one yet, but there are already way more Sierra racks out there. I did look on rockauto for merkur xr, but they have failed me for the very first time. I was hoping the granny ones just had longer arms, but shortening the casing is a bit beyond me! TIB3300 453 Posted August 24, 2024 If you can hold on for a while, I am going down the Electric PAS route Its been done before on a Cortina, but am hopefully doing a full fitment guide to follow with pictures and measurements for anyone in the future wanting to do this. This is going to be my winter job on my car

sheffieldcortinacentre 759 Posted August 27, 2024 Capri is different again as it mounts at an angle to cross member cortina is flat.

Not on my Capri, mine is flat to the cross member. I was told by a friend who overhauls steering racks Capri and Cortinas share the same power steering rack. The pumps are different and of course the pipes. Edited August 28, 2024 by STEVE440
sheffieldcortinacentre 759 Posted August 29, 2024 Thought they where at about 45° like mk1-2 escort. If not could be angle of pinion or distance between mounts. I know they're not interchangeable ( I think track rod ends are imperial thread too) it's 20+years since I've looked at one.

It's a Sierra rack from Ebay Germany . Can't remember the origin country (not Germany). The 2.8 and 3.0 Capris were the only ones to have factory PAS, though plenty of people have retrofitted PAS to 4-cyl models. I would not be surprised if the American 2.3 4-cyl Mercury Capri had PAS, but the bits would probably be tougher to track down than a Cortina one, and accepted wisdom seems to be Capri stuff won't fit.
