adamlab4 3 Posted October 30, 2024 (edited) Hi, My 1982 Mk5 was starting fine , then suddenly just a CLICK from the starter solenoid I'm presuming. The battery was new a year ago and I have charged it over night (12.7v from it prior to the over night charge) but still, the engine won't turnover, just a Click. The starter looks like it's the original. I've taken it off and it's not jammed or seized. The engine can also be turned over with a spanner so not seized either. The car has been used at least weekly and just had a big service and MOT pass a few months ago. I'm guessing I need a new starter motor but can't find a replacement for a Lucas lrs109 anywhere. All those advertised as suitable on ebay turn out not to be when I send photos. I even got sent one guaranteed to be correct but it had two points of connection on the solenoid, rather than the 3 wires that connect to mine - main battery, ground and then another black and yellow wire which is bound together with the ground. Any help would be much appreciated! Adam. Edited October 30, 2024 by adamlab4 Added photos
sheffieldcortinacentre 621 Posted October 30, 2024 Most of the ones advertised have one small terminal these are for ones with electronic ignition. Mk5 cortina (2.0 (82 only),Sierra, MK3 Granada, MK3 transit, etc all with factory electronic ignition You need one with two small terminals ( one spade, one bullet) for cortina 2.0 ohc( except 82 2.0) Mk5 1.6 ohc ( 80-82), all cortina P100,mk1-2 Granada ohc (-1982), Capri all ohc (-1982),MK2 transit ohc (-1982). They earth through casing, Black/yellow is trigger, Black is 12V non ballast to coil for starting, Red main 12V power.
adamlab4 3 Posted October 31, 2024 Hi, As always - thanks for the swift reply! Any idea where I can get the correct replacement?
Tigdlo 27 Posted October 31, 2024 A quick scout around on eBay produced zero new starters with the ballast connection. It might be worth considering converting to electronic ignition, using a module in your existing distributor. You could then ignore the ballast wire. You would need to fit a 12 volt coil. adamlab4 3 Posted October 31, 2024 Hi Tigdlo, Thanks for the reply - I'm not a mechanic and don't have loads of experience so I hadn't realised this was the case. I have already fitted an Accuspark electronic ignition so am I right in presuming I only need to reconnect the battery and the ground? If this is the case, I have found a replacement for the Lucas lrs109 on ebay.:
sheffieldcortinacentre 621 Posted October 31, 2024 A decent motor factors ,car spares ( rather than a Halfords chain store) should be able to get the right one. As unfortunately I only know places in Sheffield.

If this is the case, I have found a replacement for the Lucas lrs109 on ebay.: As you have found a replacement LRS109, just connect the wires as before. Theoretically, as you have fitted an Accuspark unit, you should have removed the ballast resistor, and fitted a 12volt coil. However, assuming that the car has been starting, and running well, just leave it as is. Hope that this helps!
adamlab4 3 Posted November 1, 2024 Hi, I believe the old one was 12v 0.8kW and the replacement one that I have found listed as a replacement for the LRS109 is 12V 1.4 Kw High Torque - is it ok to use a higher torque version? Thanks again for the help.
