You'd be surprised how much pressure there is just in the return line. I had a leak in the metal return line that runs along the chassis and up towards the tank (under the boot floor), and when I disconnected it from the plastic line alongside the chassis I got blasted with petrol. This was just after having the engine running, switching off, getting out then smelling petrol. Sticking my head under the car I could see a pool of petrol on the garage floor and sure enough the metal line had a few small pinholes.

I have put on a new pump,no change. I have pulled out the pump pushrod and the length is about 44mm,which as we know,is for the 1.6 and the 50mm is for the 2 litre engines. And on mine there is no spacer. So,if the 2 litres had the spacers on,if they are 5mm thick, meaning the pump is 5mm further away from the rod Does the car still run with the inline filter not full ? Most inline filters have the outlet positioned internally near the inlet,so most of the time they are not full of petrol,it seems strange but it's how they work. In fact if they start to fill up and stay that way it may indicate that the filter is partially blocked.
sierra3dr 51 Posted December 13, 2024 the inline filter is usually full...I have actually put a new inline filter on...I think it could be the pick up pipe on the fuel sender,as I am guessing it will have a filter
sierra3dr 51 Posted December 14, 2024 Update...found time and dry weather to remove the fuel sender....the gauze looks clogged up,can't really tell
sierra3dr 51 Posted December 14, 2024 And was think replacing it like so. Or just leave the pickup pipe without and have two inline filters before the carb
sierra3dr 51 Posted December 14, 2024 or inline pre-pump would be best
sheffieldcortinacentre 658 Posted December 14, 2024 You can get a very similar filter to the original for paint spray guns.

I'm just waiting for the battery to charge up and see if was the fault of fuel not reaching the carb

I can't see anywhere on here where you say it's not running properly due to fuel starvation I'm just trying to save you a load of work chasing something that's not a real problem because you think it should be full. If it's running ok leave it as it is. Apologies if I have missed something mate

sierra3dr 51 Posted December 26, 2024 (edited) good news everyone, she is now running correctly. Casting my memory back,I had to drop the subframe to renew the subframe bushes in May this year(2024). In doing so the fuel lines had to be split. Now,bushes renewed and the subframe reattached. A this stage,I may have crossed the fuel lines, meaning the fuel supply got connected to the return pipe. But,I had been driving the Cortina since the August 2024 MOT up to when I started this post on the 17th of November. I had only noticed this pipe cross-over when I had decided to install a new copper supply fuel line using a brass compression fitting to join the front OE pipe clipped into the subframe Edited December 26, 2024 by sierra3dr
