mk5 spotlights

Recommended Posts

Having trouble getting my spots to work. It's a GLS so all the wiring is there already.

when the lights are off there is power to no 85 so i assume that's the battery feed (and not as I have listed it on the photo).  when the full beams are on they work, but not the spots and all four pins on the relay are live, this last bit doesnt seem right to me. There is power in both pins of the connector by the radiator, which cant be right....could it be a faulty relay?

There are conflicting diagrams on the net, does anyone have a definitive diagram?  any thoughts welcome, but bear in mind ive tried all the obvious things ( wiring intact, bulbs work etc).

The lights used to work btw...

Pins 85 and 86 are what switches the relay. Pin 30 should be battery positive, and 87 the supply to spot lights.   Can you use your test light or multi-meter to trace where the supply stops ?

.......or take the terminal off pin 87 and give it a live feed from the battery (or use the supply from pin 30), if the spotlights then work you know the wiring from relay to lights is good and the fault lies with the switching side of things.  If it doesn't work then as above you'll need to trace where you have power and where you lose it.

Your description of which pin does what is as i have it in my list, in the photo. It's as I expected it to be. there's something very odd here. there's no power at 30 with lights off, only at 85 .   (edit, i just thought, do I need the ignition on for there to be power at 30?   I wonder)

I've already tested the wiring and the bulbs , they all seem good.

It had aftermarket lights fitted when i got it and i swapped back to Carellos. I wonder if someone has sswapped around the pins in the plug to make the aftermarket ones work,  a lot can happen in 40 odd years,

i tried with the ignition on and now have power at 30 and 85 when the full beam is on, which I'd expect. . Nothing at 87 so presumably the relay has failed.   i got a new relay, the pin positions are different as in photo. i shall have to be creative with the wiring. I suppose i can just run patch leads from the plug terminals to the relay terminals. relay-new.jpg

ta da!!!    new relay fitted....not pretty with the patch leads, but i'll see if i can do it tidier on a warmer day. I know motomobil do the correct configuration of pins rlays, but their minimum postage is the same for a small or large item, so will be big money. anyone got a source?

That's good you got it working, gives you time to find a relay at an autojumble !

no rush, yes, i never go out at night anyway. I can always wait until i need something else from Motomobil , they combine the postage so it pays to have a few bits and bobs to order.

The relay that you have bought is probably a bog standard one. I buy my car electric bits from Vehicle Wiring Products, which I can thoroughly recommend, having used them for many years.

Their standard 40amp relays are under £3 plus vat and p+p.

Hope this helps.
