disco_monkey79 33 Posted January 24, 2025 Is there a reason why Ford never offered the Cortina with a 2.8 cologne? Given you could buy one with a 2.3 it's not like they had to re-engineer anything. N.b. I am referring to the UK market - I am aware South Africa and Australia did get bigger engines. Were Ford concerned that this would encroach on the Granada and Capri territory? But a car sold is still a car sold, be it a Cortina, Granada or Capri. Just idle curiosity. Thanks
sheffieldcortinacentre 763 Posted January 24, 2025 Basically yes , & it was considered a family car rather than a sports saloon ( V6 capris were still selling well bouyed by the professionals macho image) a big engined cortina would've been a niche market ( the sierra XR4i was a sales flop compared to the 4x4 version) the conversion companies realised this too with race proved building only a handful of MK4 savages & John young building the single super speed EST I believe. The UK was a world away from the one we now inhabit were sporty coupés are virtually unheard of with high powered family cars are common place. The Australian straight six cortinas were more to do with relaxed high speed crusing than sporty performance. They were living in the musclecar era were 300+ hp was the norm with the big 3 fielding falcons, toranas & chargers. South Africa had a similar culture at 2/3 scale with 3.0-5.0 engined cars especially from ford & GM.
disco_monkey79 33 Posted January 24, 2025 Thanks for the info. At least Ford put more thought in to their line-up than BL. Interesting to read that the XR4i was a sales flop - I had one years ago and loved it (didn't love the incredibly cheap door cards and horrendously cracked dashboard, but that was 80s Ford penny pinching). It's a shame that coupes are now so rare. Though I am very glad Ford haven't (at least not yet) resurrected the Cortina name and slapped it on yet another bland SUV. sheffieldcortinacentre 763 Posted January 24, 2025 I think their busy licking their wounds over the Capri fiasco at the moment, they've compounds full of them ( explorers too)due to the public waking up over the whole EV . . They've already said the production lines can't go any slower & may actually have to stop, Chrysler are the latest to tell the governments that no matter how much they push EV's that people don't want them as like they told them they're not a viable replacement as the technology can't get close to the range or charge rate required no matter what they say.but non of the politicians want to lose face by admitting they were wrong. I believe at least half a dozen of the market leaders are saying there will be major plant closures this year & is a major reason for high used car prices. VAG have already told the governments to stop meddling with industry as it was them promising diesel emissions targets that they were told were unachievable, hgvs are already not Inc the 2030 limits as to get the range of a current one load capacity would be circa 7 ton or to match the current capacity the trucks would be to heavy for the roads to carry. But all this is being quietly small printed. the 80's a returning due to greed & incompetence just like last time, but it's hitting the middle classes this time as the working class has been cut beyond the bone with people unwilling to do the mundane/grunt work & the short term fix of upping retirement age hasn't worked. Won't belong before the parasites are bombarding us with " were you miss sold an EV".

A mate of mine had a Nissan EV van for work and his wife had a BMW EV.... he now drives a diesel transit and she has a diesel Yaris..... both said charging and range were awful PLUS deprecitiation..... they lost as muuch in 2 years as it cost to buy the Yaris..... The yaris is now free he says....AND he says even if they double the fuel cost and road tax it would still be cheeper to run the yaris. 😁😜

sheffieldcortinacentre 763 Posted January 25, 2025 (edited) The biggest market ( north America) cars are a necessity not a luxury & so EV are absolutely useless with the distance they have to cover daily their not anti EV due to a love of oil, it's from a practical point of view. At the present time hydrogen is the why forward , they say LPG is not eco friendly due to being oil derived ,but it'll still be produced as propane is used domestically & is very low emission way better than even current ic engs & it's all supposed to be about exhaust emissions???? He was an owner driver with a Foden 6 wheel Tipper.... because he had parked there since the house was new he appealled to the council and won, his deeds were ammended to show the clause.... if my mate ever sells up i want his house, hes got a 4 car garage and 4 car drive or 1 Peterbilt😂... Ive looked into buying a Day Cab Peterbilt from USA and registering it here.... .... the wife says i cant have the drive to park on and i recon our neighbours wouldnt be too chuffed to open the curtains to see a Big Rig sitting at eye level in the street.😂😂
sheffieldcortinacentre 763 Posted January 29, 2025 Philistines I'd be over the moon, few years ago one of my neighbours had a modern GT 500 loved it every time he went past. Someone complained council came out re noise complaint the checked were shown the car was bog standard confirmed it met all legal requirements & whoever complained was told tough .. 😆😆😆
disco_monkey79 33 Posted January 29, 2025 Blimey but people can be such @rseholes! Luckily my neighbour on one side is a mechanic working out of a workshop at the bottom of his garden, so he can't exactly complain about the noise I make! But even if I weren;t a car nut, no way would I dream of complaining at whatever anyone parked on their drive it's their drive!
