Numpty question - where does this go?

Having just replaced the rear brakes using a new fittings kit, I am left with a pair of these. 

 

All the other bits in the kit took the place of an old bit I removed, but whoever did the brakes last time must have left them out.

Just noticed that the kit covers cortina, granada and several Renault models, so it may be they are for a master/traffic?

It goes on the pin for handbrake lever to hold it to the shoe.

Theres a slot in the pin .

Hi, follow up question please. I found that the handbrake cable was seized so bought a new one, which also led me to discover this guide/support was hanging off...! 

Haynes (not known for their honesty and accuracy) say to just pull the cable out. So should there be a slight gap to allow this? Both of mine are completely closed up but that may be due to impact. Thanks

There's enough give in the slot for the cable gently prise apart with a flat blade screwdriver to aid fitting cable through.
