MK4 V6 woken up from hibernation

Recommended Posts

I've not started this or even had it out of the garage since Cortina day in June last year. Only snag is the battery is knackered. Had a job starting it using a slave battery which is also as much use as a chocolate tea pot..

Just about managed it but I'll have to go out and buy another battery. Local show tomorrow.

I just dug out the old receipt for the battery. I thought I'd not had it that long but I bought it back in 2014. Shocking but not bad for a Eurocarparts Lion battery that everyone says are rubbish. Well past it's three year warranty

Cheers  Difficult to get the proper sound of it on video but it does sound nice for a 2.8 V6. Slightly tappety but nothing to worry about I don't think. What worries me more is It does leak some oil which is something I need to look at but where to start ?

Maybe not leaking, just sweating power ?!

I just re watched the video on my pc. It actually sounds like that in reality. Very hard to tell on a phone which it was recorded on.

It's certainly sweating something. I really must take a look at it. Could be the crank seal, Sump, Head gaskets. Anything. It leaks a bit from the rocker covers. New gaskets in recent years too. I also changed the rear crank seal about 10 years ago but that seemed to carry on leaking as before. Cheap seal no doubt..

Clean eng then run hopefully leak will be more obvious, are the rocker covers flat, as overtightening can cause distortion.same for sump.

Does it have the oil cooler between block & filter, is it snug/ sealing ok.

No oil cooler Craig. I nipped the rocker covers up yesterday. They're the second set I've had on it. Could be warped I suppose, really not sure.

Can't comment on the sump as it was fitted by an engine builder about 25years ago. Could be though. I wouldn't put anything past them.

It might just need nipping up due to gasket drying out/shrinkage.

They warp around bolt holes if overtightened if the haven't not the little spreader plates under the bolts.

I know what you mean. The rocker covers look ok to be honest. They don't look out of shape near the bolt holes. No spreader plates on mine but I think later engines have them. I seem to remember them on my MK2 Granada which was an B reg, 85.
