brake judder

Recommended Posts

All of a sudden my brakes developed a pronounced judder when braking.  It cleared after several applications..

i'd just come through some road works, maybe i picked up a stone in the caliper?

It  did it again on way home (travelling slowly) when the brakes were not applied, could be the stone making it's way out?

I could smell that hot brakes smell faintly . both hubs turning freely.

I took them apart and had a good look just now, couldnt see anything wrong except one caliper not tight enough (it is now) i cant see that being the cause if it juddered when not braking.

Whst do you think?

(one caliper recently stripped and cleaned, the other is a refurbuished unit. pads new, pipes new.)

it was literally only for a second or two both times.... that would be there most of the time i think. i'll road test it tomorrow to see if i can get it to do it again....could have been the bolts being a bit loose i guess, i could fractioannly move the calliper in its carrier.

I remember years ago....(when my father had series landrovers 🙄) i was driving an old landy series 2 on a lane and had a horrific but brief steering wobble.... dad laughed and said "yep, thats a death wobble, time to check track rod ends"....

The vehicle in question spent 90% of its time in a field at 10mph.... out on the lane it was awful....

And yes those track rod ends....3 on a landy were all very shot.

To get a brief 'wobble' somethings gotta be loose????... or very worn????

i'll look out for that.

I put it back together and took it out on the road. only when braking and only sometimes, it's as if something is sliding or moving a little  and then there's a thump.

I can't see anything wrong with the brake calipers but i guess it could be shocks, or wheel bearings or steering rack . seems to be drivers side front but hard to tell. I'll have to pull it apart again. I think i'll take the calipers right off incase something is caught behind one, which was my initial thought. i'  ll put it up and stands and give everything a good wiggle.

it seems the problem is actually the back brakes....i pushed the car back a couple of feet and the wheel is solid, cant push it anyfurther , investigating that now.

here's the problem i think...completely detached.brake-linings.jpg

With bonded shoes this is usually caused by damp &/or age.

Yep it's the thing called progress ( more commonly known as cost-cutting/profit maximising).
