C0RKTINA 107 Posted November 6, 2025 Im getting a knocking rattling noise from my back axle....it could be the exhaust hitting something, but i think not, so Im thinking bushes. which bushes are the most likely to be worn..... please dont just say the Void Bushes, because i need to be pointed at the bush itself ( the last time i did someit was the two on top of the axle, but the symptoms were differnt....on that car , the axle was sliding about the place. My garage is having a look next week so I'll then be able to order bushes for it, but i thought if there was an obvious candidate I could get them in advance... btboy 50 Posted November 6, 2025 We had a car that did similar - double check the top bolts on the rear shocks are fully tightened.

The bushes i have listed are all for the upper arms. The problem could be a lower or an upper arm bush (8 in total). I would put my money on upper. Also there are different size bushes available for the lower arm. Hence, why i wouldn't buy anything till i knew where the problem is. btboy 50 Posted November 6, 2025 I’d check your shocks too - they have their own bushes that can wear and cause knocking
sheffieldcortinacentre 753 Posted November 6, 2025 (edited) Most common is the pair on top of the diff, next being the lower arm axle end. You'll need the tools too remove/insert the bushes ( as their an interference fit ) least likely are the body end off the arms . The lower arm front one had smaller bushes on prefacelift mk3's/TC1 after that they all used same larger one ( but earlier arms could've been swapped on at sometime). Axle bushes MUST be tightened with the weight on them or they'll be twisted once at normal ride height causing premature splitting/tearing. There's one bush in each end of arm each at a different size. Top of diff X2, Top arm body end X2, Lower arm axle end X2, Lower arm body end X2 prefacelift (smaller version, Lower arm body end x2 facelift onwards (larger version) Shocker bushes it's usually the lower bushes they used to be available but rare to find them nowadays. Wear in any of the above will cause a thud , worn exhaust rubbers usually causes a hollow clank/clang. C0RKTINA 107 Posted November 6, 2025 (edited) ok i'll let the garage decide whats needed and proceed from there. I assume from what Craig said that new shocks would be needed if the rubbers are worn. It could be that I'm hearing because the car is driving nice and tight .... my Tuanus was all over the place when it needed bushes. AT least the mechanic could hear what i was saying about and didnt seem to think the wheel bearings were an issue, tthe second thing i wanted them to check....they could scream their heads off and i wouldnt hear it. (it's a low mileage car, but the age is there.... Edited November 6, 2025 by norton
C0RKTINA 107 Posted November 7, 2025 thanks for all the info guys, much appreciuated. The car is going to the garage next friday to see whats needed. Im leaning towards it being the shock bushes, probably would have to get new units altogether, buit they seem readily available and my garage should be able to get them, maybe 50 squid the pair. The part no which seems to crop up most is 43017 or 443017 i have the bushes indentified now, would be about €125 plus p+p for the eight, c either way not too dear. Labour is another matter....( im getting too old for rolling round the floor under the car, makes me feel nauseus after a while.
