joemayhook 7 Posted November 21 (edited) Good morning Please can anyone advise. I have a 1982 2lt manual mk5 estate, at the end of the summer she started to play up. Now she will only start with juice poured into the webber carb and then only runs for 2 to 4 seconds. It has a new fuel pump and the fuel is getting to the card. I have just taken out and clean the two side jets and no difference. Please can one of you lovely people shed any light on this problem. Cheers Edited November 21 by joemayhook
John Mack 323 Posted November 21 Is the gauze filter at the carb clean? Not sure what you mean by side jets?

John Mack 323 Posted November 21 From your fault description it sounds like the float chamber/reservoir is dry and it's only running on the fuel that you've poured down it's throat. When you say there's fuel getting to the carb I assume you've removed the feed at the carb and cranked the engine and fuel has come out the pipe? If the filter is good then you'll need to lift the lid on the carb, take the tiny clip off the choke flap linkage and move the rod off the spindle. Be VERY careful as the clip could ping off and get lost. There's also a plastic type guide the lever goes through on the carb body but this won't hinder you taking the carb top off but may when you refit it. After the choke link rod is off, remove the 6 screws and lift the carb top off.......this is when you'll see if there's petrol in the reservoir/float chamber. Assuming there isn't then you'll need to check the needle valve that the float activated.......maybe it's sticking. The above should give you enough info to lifting the carb top but searching youtube for a tutorial on cleaning the carb out would be a good idea? sheffieldcortinacentre 704 Posted November 21 If there is fuel in float chamber make sure the two jets in bottom of chamber are clean/clear .
joemayhook 7 Posted November 22 (edited) Ok, sorry my mistake, I thought there was fuel in the bowl but there wasn't. I have just put on a new fuel pump that i had knocking about, still no fuel. There is 100% fuel in tank. Any ideas please guys? Edited November 22 by joemayhook Bad typos
sheffieldcortinacentre 704 Posted November 22 Is fuel getting to the pump, & coming out of pump? I have come across some pumps were to pipes fit on opposite unions to one already fitted. If nothing is getting to pump suspect a blocked pipe or pick up in tank. Is it coming out of pump ? Is the pump pushrod to short /missing? As again I've come across pumps that have a shorter rod & so need the isolated block removing or they have a short rod in block that can fall out & rest in the triangle on cradle. If pump is pumping is the pipe blocked between pump & carb, or on a Weber is the filter in the large brass nut blocked. If fuel is getting into bowl as the accelerator pump diaphragm split so not giving a squirt of fuel to aid starting.( Single & twin choke carbs).
