Where's the best (cheapest?) place to get a starter motor from?

Recommended Posts

Preferably not too far from the Merseyside area, so that I can go and collect it and part ex my old one. I've looked on fleebay and there's a place in Oldham selling one for £69 plus change but his reviews are not the greatest.:huh::shocking:  GSF did list them the other night but I think their website was having a wobbler 'cos now it doesn't. (that was a stab in the dark) Also when it said they were available they listed them with 9 teeth, not 10!  Today, it says "fits VW this Beetle, that bus/van" etc etc. I don't have a VW anymore! So any suggestions? Oh and Euro car parts don't seem to have one in stock anywhere! Hellfrauds are usless unless you want to buy some polish, or a bike!

That version is for ohv engines ( Def doesn't fit anything but rwd fords) with the ohc versions be very careful when ordering/buying as it will say it also fits sierra/MK3 Granada.

It will physically but as these two have factory electronic ignition the solenoid only has one small bullet terminal, all Cortina/Capri/Granada etc versions with a std points distributor MUST have one with 2 small terminals one bullet & one spade or it won't work no matter what they're computer says.

Again not local to you but I've used Unit Exchange (Link) for my MK4 in the past. If I recall they can exchange by post if that helps

Success! I found a place in Leyland, called 'Lancashire Rotating Electrics'. Just under an hours drive from my house (they do courier too). They tested my old unit and told me that it was "knackered". I think that's electrical talk for,...

So they sold me a brand new unit. A little smaller and a little lighter but more powerful as he reckons the old one is about 0.8Kw and the new one is 1.1Kw. The best part is, they didn't take the old starter in exchange and the new one only cost me £66.00 including the VAT. Fingers crossed that I can fit it tomorrow and the car will start first time, without melting the insulation on the red lead from the battery!

I think I'm gonna need some longer starter bolts though.

I just got back from the damp and wet lockup, after fitting the new starter yesterday I forgot to take the battery with me! Anyway, I cranked it over and the car almost landed on its' roof.. I've never heard an old Cortina turn over with so much gusto! I was so impressed, if I win the Euromillions, I might buy the company. Ala Victor Kiam and Remington. Anyway, my new startermotor was courtesy of Lancashire Rotating Electrics up in Leyland.

I had it running before I took this, hence the non starting as I was putting it away so I had the choke pulled out. DOH , and it's dark in the garage! No, I suddenly don't have an oil light because cack handed me, in my eagerness to fit the starter, snapped the wire off the sender plug and now I can't find it.
