Brake fluid leak between cylinder and servo

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I've joined the forum recently because I have a Ford Taunus TC1 (post-facelift) and being so similar to the Cortina Mk3 I thought I could get the most help here :)

I only drive it every 2-3 months and this time I noticed that the brakes feel soft. Thinking there are some bubbles in the system, I pumped the brakes a few times with the bonnet open and could see air bubbles rising in the rear part of the brake fluid reservoir. Upon closer inspection, there seems to be a leak in the union between the brake cylinder and the servo - you can see in the attached picture where the brake fluid has stripped out the paint from the servo and corrosion started to set in.

I'm wondering if a new set of seals like FORD Cortina Mk3 Brake Master Cylinder Repair Seals Kit (With Servo) (1970- 76) | eBay UK would fix the issue? Sadly the plastic tag is missing from the cylinder and can't fully check if the parts are compatible.

It will have a leaking seal or seals in the master cylinder not the sERvo.

That kit will not work, as yours is fitted with the Ate brand of master cylinder identifiable by the 13mm mounting nuts & narrower distance between the two mounting studs.

That cylinder was only used for approx the last 12 months of production ( late 81-82) on Mk5 cortinas in tHe UK & is hard to find or find parts for.

The later one's late late TC2-3  have 3 pipes instead of but you can blank the lower front one of with a bleed nipple & it will work correctly.

@sheffieldcortinacentre thank you for your detailed answer! This kind of in depth knowledge is why I joined this forum :)

I've found that Motomobil has a kit for the ATE cylinder, I'll order it soon and report back: master brake cylinder sealing kit (only for brake assistance, "ATE")

@markymarkthree thanks, if I fail to replace the seals by myself I'll contact them for a repair.
