Exhaust for a Mk 4

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Whilst test driving the Cortina after bleeding the brakes today, the exhaust rear section broke (due to age) 😖, so I'm going to have to source a new one.

Are the exhausts for the pinto engined mk 3 and mk 5 interchangeable? I can see exhausts for those available online but no mk4s.

Cheers

Jim

Thanks Craig. Any tips for fitting it? Never done an exhaust before!

gets car high as poss to let axle hang down then corkscrew that piece through between axle & body.

Fit all pieces loosely & adjust before final tightening.

Good rubbers too is a good idea if old ones are splitting, lube them with WD 40 etc to help them slip on.

Thanks to all for the tips!

I'm guessing separating the old section at the flange is going to be tough. What's the best way to deal with that?

Angle grinder slit the pipe just past the joint & remove, then slit the remainder & it should spring slightly apart ( if not open up with a thin chisel/screwdriver) then slid short bit of.

Sand the pipe to allow new piece to eaierly slide on.

£32.50 fitted, with a years guarantee! Oh, sorry I was back in 1982 for a moment then and my first job when I left school. Seeing the diagram took me back to KackFit for a moment. Another Kackfit tip is, when/if you or anybody has to remove the front/down pipe, take the sealing ring and hold it about a foot off the floor and drop it. If it goes "TING" it's OK, if it goes "DINK" it's most likely cracked.

If you can't get the back end high enough to "corckscrew" it over the axle, try disconnecting the left rear shock absorber from the axle and move it out of the way, that'll give you a bit more wiggle room. We used to scare some Cortina owners by having the rear wheels almost at the very end of the ramp, with the boot just sitting out in space. That gave us plenty of room to screw the back box into position.

Haha never heard 'kackfit' before

Corkscrewing the exhaust was fairly easy to be honest. The bit that took most of the time was removal of the old pipe from the mid section. It took a fair bit of heat, angle grinding, swearing and whacking to get it off.

Another issue was the poor fit of the replacement, it was a few inches too short at the front straight section, causing it to knock slightly to a chassis rail. I fixed that with a heat proof rubber ring to cushion it.
