Creating DIN brake flares

Hiya

 

I am really hoping for a simple answer, as I have read various things that have merely confused my simple brain.

I need to replace the rather grotty hard lines, and so...

 

Question 1: should these be DIN?

 

Assuming yes, then the bubbles for the male fittings are straightforward enough.

 

But what about for the female fittings, e.g. where the main line (running the length of the car) meets the rear flexi hose? The flexi hose is male, so the hard line needs to be female. But DIN tools only appear to make single flares (unlike SAE which contain tooling to make single (convex) flares, or double (concave) flares).

 

Question 2: to make a female fitting, do I make a single bubble flare (same as for male), and this crushes against the male fitting to form the seal?

Yes you make them the same.

Bubble first the redo to make the female  version.

Thanks for the reply. But how do I re-do in DIN? The tool only has one former/shaper, to make the bubble. The other end is to set the depth of the pipe in the tool.

The tools that I've come across like the one above have an operation 1 (to make male end) and the other end is operation 2 (which after doing op.1 you then do op.2 to flare it for female end).

 

Do you actually have the tool or is the above one a type you're thinking of buying?   I can't imagine a tool that'll only flare pipes to suit a male end ??

Thanks for the reply. The trouble is your link is to an SAE tool which commonly have the bits to make single and double.

 

I believe cortinas use the DIN (metric) system, the tools tend to only form a mushroom/bubble, which makes me wonder how they affix to a male fitting, eg the rear flexi line

Never had one of those ,but cortinas have the same flares as all the other vehicles I've worked on, only the thread of the unions varied .

Don't get what you mean with din & sae flares?

Worked on stuff from MK2 Zcars of the 50s upto the teens & used the same one on all of them.

I don't quite understand but these days it doesn't take much to confuse me !

 

As Craig mentioned above the only difference with pipes is the ends....thread sizes, male/female ends.    3/16 pipe size has been used forever too.

 

Have you looked for an guide on you-tube ?  Someone there is sure to want to explain.

Sorry for the slow reply. Seems there's 2 systems that are similar but not identical. My car is a confusing mix of the two, quite possibly due to the previous owner being a bodge artist and using anything instead of the correct part. But I have made up a set of new lines, which hopefully won't leak. Thanks

bit late to this but i just had to learn all this DIN Vs SAE on mates anglia, basicly DIN are flat on the inner face, the outer face is ni on the same (see pic below), it seems as long as the union matches the flair you can mix and match SAE and DIN unions as the threads are the same and the outer mating faces are the same or close enough to seal ok which is how a lot 60s cars are apparently (as i just found out), we basicly redid all the unions in DIN as we replaced all the brake lines and fittings.

gotta say never knew half of this myself.
