  1. Thank you, This was one of my theories, yep it's a later 1982 Y reg. hmm What would you do?
  2. Hi, My brakes were/are faulty, pedal flat on floor, even after going round the disks and drums so was going to replace master cylinder with new but looks like I've got the wrong one. So maybe recon the old one, is it worth it? Can I buy a new one like it somewhere? Guys on FB group suggest Past Parts for recondition, and their work looks fantastic but at £170ish should I consider other options? Pics below, cant see any markings on it. THANKS!
  3. Thanks SCC Seems like sensible advice. Set up as it is first. And timing. Cheers. After that it's worth going electronic though right?
  4. Not had a lot of luck with my Mk5. I restored it after being stood many years, got it going and many bits n pieces along with set new points a few years ago and amazingly actually made it to retro rides gathering. On the way back it was lumpy and hot and cutting out. Basically only seems to keep going if you're light on revs and dip clutch to keep moving. Just splutters cutting out and jumps stop start as a result. I've barely used it last few years despite having many new parts on it now, pretty much all Cooling parts. I thought (wrongly) it was the vV carb so just had my mechanic fit a brand new 32 36 Weber. Left mot station after fitting and broke down. Damn. I'm now thinking it must be the fact it's not got electronic ignition. Is there a cheap reliable kit to go for? It's obviously a limited milage classic I just want to enjoy it for once. Losing faith and interest. I want to choose fast as if this is the cause I want to get on it. My mechanic still has the car and he's back in on Wednesday. Will suggest this and hoping he has good checks up his experienced sleeve too. Thanks!
  5. Thank you again. loads to go on there. I'm technical minded but self learning even these basic cars, my old man was/is a mechanic of sorts, so got the bug off him but little to no instruction! So it's all good Thanks A vac hose had come out before my last journey, so I hoped and presumed that would be it. I need to have a really good look at it all. Many thanks. will report back. :)
  6. Thanks for taking the time there, a lot of good info to go on. Will take a look at points and things soon. As far as I'm aware it's the original head so I've been adding additive (redex) to the fuel. I don't think I've checked camshaft clearances. Thanks again It's appreciated.
  7. Hiya, I hope you can advice. I got my car on the road and managed a big trip o a show in it last years summer. It wasn't great on teh final leg and way back and seemed to struggle when hot. I left it till this spring when i worked on some of what i thought was problems affecting it. Manifold seal replaced and down pipe reconnected so no engine bay gas leaks. Cooling worked on to replace pipes and thermostat etc etc. It is still rubbish when hot, It's actually OK before things get hot on a proper run. So now I think the problem is fuelling or timing. It's now almost 2 years since I set the points and added new andpoints and condenser. I'm looking at getting electronic ignition like this, is this a good choice? http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5574629005&toolid=10001&campid=5335900709&customid=&mpre=http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Cortina-Pinto-Electronic-ignition-for-Motorcraft-/170571869233?hash=item27b6e02c31:g:R38AAOSwTA9X3P63 My mate gave me a strobe timing light. I'm not quite sure how to set timing but will have to try if i use this. I should search out and replace the fuel filter too I think. Any other ideas? Cheers
  8. Thanks for the tips. Dunno what i'll do yet. can't hurt to have a go I suppose.
  9. Just while I was winning at replacing all pipes and cooling bits, my Heater pipe had broken and now spins round and leaks.... Would it work if I attempted a clean up and flux and solder melt in with torch? or do I need to get a pro or plumber on the job? Cheers
  10. thread anniversary bump! I still have original parts on, open to upgrades but might stay standard a bit longer and save up. I did a land mark trip to Retro Rides Gathering last August. It overheated a few times mostly while queuing(!!) Cruising was OK. Bodges don't last forever plus the exhaust manifold was leaking too so need to fix that. I now have gaskets, spare new studs and bolts in the post and originals loosened ready. I just need a gasket for my down pipe but can't see one on eBay etc. Can you point out an appropriate item please? Just need to loosen those bolts and seal it all up again. Cheers
  11. Thanks, he says that it's just tracking, if that's true it's settled while I've had it on the road. I'll still be getting some bushes done in the near future, just a relief I don't need loads for MOT, will know more tomorrow.
  12. I've been looking and you might be right about that. I'll find out for sure tomorrow! Eek
  13. Presumed it was 16mm and measured up that way too. Local factors didn't have it and Euro said they didn't have it without checking. Liars! So running some flush and getting ready for MOT Cheers
  14. hmm I don't know, I'm super close to another MOT so I'm going to see what he finds on MOT this week. fingers crossed!
  15. Thanks, good check list plan that. :) My mate works at a suppliers so might be able to send some if i know the diameter, can pluck it off to check later. Failing that, I head up my local factors. :)
