  1. I see, still 9 months is a pee take, axle tubes can be straightened or replaced, halfshafts can be replaced "IF" needed?, either way a "classics specialist" should know people who can sort this within 9 months, parts are harder to come by nowdays yes i get that, when i had a workshop and "did" cortinas i had a network of banger racers who TBH were the only people who had old cars laying about but still,  there's axles on ebay? a lot of garages specialise, specialise in waffle to get the car in  :headscratch:  had some experiance of that recently myself, a classic car specialist in wales who had to give up cos they couldn't figure out my wifes Mk1 mondeos rear brakes :shocking: so i feel your pain, especialy if you cant do the work yourself

  3. Never really been much of a fan of hammerite TBH, i prefer a good vactan (rust convertor) then boat enamel paint which is what hammerite is anyway, it's just buying a non branded version is cheaper, TA paints is where the stuff i use comes from, £55 for 5L it's pretty popular on narrow boats, mind you i get the dregs of the tins for free so maybe i'm biased  :angel_not: i still use hammerits i just don't buy it

It is hard to trust the quality of any aftermarket or pattern parts these days. Cheap crap Chinese made parts are sold from UK based sellers masquerading as genuine suppliers taking on UK names and addresses.

I won't knowingly buy Chinese or far eastern made goods any more.

I guess many of you have heard the saying - 'after the pleasure of cheap goods comes the disappointment of shoddy workmanship'.

ironicly it was Conficius who said that

the old memory is bad but I think you dropped it there.

A unique car as it was re-registered in Ireland before it left Reading. Should be impossible, but it was taxed with new number plates before it left Reading. I would have driven it home only the mk3 wheels I had for it didnt fit. :-)  Rode home on another recovery.

dropped it off, picked it up, all the same thing just in reverse , ish

TBH my main memory of that was your mum pointing out a red Kite fkying in the sky, she had better eyesight than me !

Seems to be ok but does absorb water  so don't leave any in over winter.

Had some with water in only say palm size but caused alotta head scratching until drained.

I just had to rebuild a Pre XF carb on a boat for the 3rd time cos the owner keeps forgetting to run it out of fuel before laying it up for the winter  TBH it's .ged internaly, 3 winters and the water has corroded the hell out of the insides, mind you there's a lot more water around a boat than a car (hopefully!)

    Hi Rob

Hope you’re well. Miss your stories and never ending how to tips!

Don't worry, i'm still full of it  although the stories are fewer and the tips will be even fewer as age has mudded the waters some what.

every part to do with the speedo is sold out appart from 1 worm gear but there are 3 to choose from, you dont want to buy the wronge one and not have it fit your drive gear, better off getting a matched pair off an old box if you can find one.

I think it's usually the 4 start worm gears that dont fit most of the drives, they are usually in commercial boxes, there's a 4/5 and 6 start worm gears then 5 or 6 drive gears to choose from

  14. you "may" need to match the speedo drive and worm gear, depending on what is in the box, to use the drive gear from the 4 speed box you may also need to use the worm gear as well (worm gear is in the box, drive gear is the one that comes out and the cable sits in) as i say it depends, some combinations fit together some dont so it's usually best to fit as a pair.

  15. is it a true baby atlas or just a narrow atas? a lot of narrow atlass get called babys when they are not , how wide is the axle ? (flange face to flange face), baby atlases came on european built escorts only AFAIK hense rare.

    Baby ... 48.5" wide
    Narrow (Mk1 3 litre Capri) 50" wide
    Standard (Mk2 & 3 Capri) 52" long wide

you have to have the half shaft that goes to your axle or they are too long, you cant use a 52 capri shaft in a baby without altering it.

fostek are the ones to talk to they can shorten longer (wider) shafts to fit the shorter (narrower) tubes if you cant find the correct half shaft for your axle
